These are illustrative composites drawn from patterns we see repeatedly across client work and competitive audits, not a single named case study. The point isn’t which company did it — it’s which structural traits show up every time topical authority is real.
The clearest topical authority pattern in software marketing is the company that stops writing generic blog content and instead builds a pillar page around its core category — “expense management,” “customer data platforms,” “field service scheduling” — supported by dozens of tightly scoped spokes: one page per use case, one per integration, one per competitor comparison. The strongest pattern pairs a clinical or legal topic cluster with visible credentialing at every layer: a named author with a real bio and credentials, a “reviewed by” byline from a licensed practitioner, publication and last-reviewed dates, and citations to primary sources rather than to other blogs.
The structural tell of genuine authority is that the cluster covers the topic from multiple angles a real patient or client would actually need — symptoms, causes, treatment options, cost, insurance questions, urgency guidance, and recovery expectations — all cross-linked to each other and to a credentialed author page. Weak versions have the same keyword coverage but a generic “Medical Team” byline with no verifiable individual behind it, no review date, and no outbound citations.
Structured data reinforces this pattern: Article schema with author and reviewedBy fields, MedicalWebPage or LegalService markup where appropriate, and FAQPage schema on the questions patients actually ask. AI Overviews and answer engines lean on exactly these signals — a named, credentialed author plus citations to primary sources — when deciding which source to cite for a sensitive query, so the E-E-A-T work and the AI-visibility work are the same work here.
Local topical authority looks structurally different because the “topic” is really a matrix: service type crossed with geography. A roofing company that dominates a metro area typically has a page for each core service (replacement, repair, inspection, storm damage) and, beneath each, pages for the neighborhoods it actually serves — not auto-generated city pages with the city name swapped in a template, but pages with genuinely local detail: permit requirements that vary by municipality, HOA quirks in specific subdivisions, and reviews from customers in that area.
The tell that separates real local topical authority from a doorway-page scheme is specificity that couldn’t be templated. A strong neighborhood page mentions the roof pitch styles common to homes built in that area’s development era, or a local weather pattern that drives a particular type of damage. The weak version has identical URL structure and word count but reads the same from one city page to the next with the city name as the only variable — a facade both search engines and readers recognize.
Product retailers build topical authority around categories rather than individual SKUs. The pattern: a category buying guide (“How to Choose a Standing Desk”) sits above narrower guides (by size, budget, use case, material) and comparison content, all linking down to actual product listings and up to the category page. The buying guide layer earns the topical authority — product pages alone rarely rank for informational queries, but the guide layer captures the research phase of the buyer journey and hands the buyer off to a product page once they’re ready.
What makes this pattern genuine rather than thin is specificity grounded in real product knowledge: guides that reference actual spec differences, acknowledge tradeoffs honestly, and get updated when the product lineup changes. Thin versions publish generic “top 10” content with no real differentiation between entries and no connection to the retailer’s actual inventory.
Publishers build topical authority differently — through consistency and interlinking of ongoing coverage rather than a fixed pillar-and-spoke architecture. A publication that “owns a beat” demonstrates it through a topic hub page that aggregates every article on the subject, a track record of being first or most thorough on developments in that beat, and consistent internal linking between related stories that signals ongoing investment in the subject.
The observable difference between a publisher with real topical authority and one chasing trending keywords is follow-through: does the site keep covering the topic, link new coverage back to prior coverage, and let a reporter’s byline become associated with the beat over time — a signal similar to credentialing in the medical/legal pattern. A site that publishes once on a trend and never returns has keyword coverage, not topical authority.
Several patterns look like topical authority on a surface crawl but fail under scrutiny — from both search engines and the humans deciding whether to trust the source.
Every genuine pattern above shares three traits regardless of industry: a clear architectural spine connecting a hub to its supporting content, specificity that couldn’t have been produced without real subject-matter knowledge, and visible signals of who is responsible for the content and why they’re credible. The anti-patterns fail on one or more of these — usually specificity, since it’s the hardest to fake and the easiest to detect, whether the detector is a human reader, a search algorithm, or an AI system evaluating which source to cite.
Open three or four pages that should be differentiated (three location pages, three comparison pages, three buying guides) and check whether the substantive content changes meaningfully between them or only the proper nouns change — templated pages with swapped variables are the clearest tell of manufactured rather than genuine authority.
